The New York Premiere of ‘Shaft’ Packed A Powerful Punch of Star Power, Echos Theme of Fatherhood And Legacy

It was all lights, camera, action on June 10 at the AMC Lincoln Square in New York City as the cast, crew, and celebrated admirers alike swarmed the orange carpet to show love to the latest installation of the legendary film series, ‘Shaft.’

With Tim Story taking over the helm as director and executive producer, along with black-ish’ and ‘grown-ish’ creator Kenya Barris serving as executive producer and screenwriter, the sixth installment of the franchise stars Samuel L. Jackson, who reprises his role as John Shaft II from the 2000 entry of the film series, and ‘Shaft’ newcomers, Jessie T. Usher, who appears in the film as Shaft II’s son, John “JJ” Shaft Jr., and the ever-funny Regina Hall as JJ’s mother and ex-wife of Shaft II, Maya.

Solidifying the return to its Warner Brothers roots (Paramount was at the helm for the original reboot), the O.G., Richard Roundtree, also reprises his role in the film as John Shaft, which makes for a hilarious mix of inter-generational hijinks and action, with each Shaft jostling for position to prove that they’re “the cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about. (Shaft.)”

We can dig it.

The array of talent we spoke to also dug into the excitement of the franchise’s latest installment.

Get a closer look below as we caught up with stars of the film, such as Samuel L. Jackson, Luna Lauren Velez and Avan Jogia (who had a premonition about his Toronto Raptors), and Tim Story. Super Bowl Champion Willie Colon, and actors Cedric The Entertainer and Richard Lawson also chimed in to touch on the importance of Shaft’s legacy:

The film opened on June 14, just ahead of Father’s Day weekend, and landed in the top 10 at the box office.
